GRASTON TECHNIQUE

GRASTON TECHNIQUE

The Graston Technique is a modern manual method that uses specially shaped stainless steel instruments to treat soft tissues. Its purpose is to release shortened structures, relieve pain, improve muscle and joint function and support recovery. This technique is becoming increasingly popular, particularly among athletes, but it is also highly effective for everyday musculoskeletal complaints.

What is the Graston Technique?

The Graston Technique® is a form of myofascial mobilisation that uses specially shaped, blunted metal instruments. These tools enable the therapist to target muscles, fascia (the superficial sheaths surrounding the muscles) and other soft tissues with precision. The aim is to disrupt and break down small areas of scar tissue, adhesions or stiffness that cause pain and restricted movement.

How does a Graston session work?

Using the metal instruments, the therapist works specifically over the affected areas, applying sufficient pressure. At times this pressure can be more intense and may result in mild skin reddening or small subcutaneous bleeds (known as petechiae). These are a natural response of the body and disappear on their own within a few days.

The procedure itself is, however, usually very comfortable for the client and does not lead to the painful or bruise-like after-effects that many people fear. Graston is a safe and effective method that supports the body's natural healing processes.

What is Graston suitable for?

This technique is excellent not only for athletes looking to speed up recovery, but also as part of treatment for various diagnoses and painful conditions, such as:

  • Tennis and golfer's elbow
  • Shoulder, back and neck pain
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Iliotibial band syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Restricted movement following surgery or injury
  • Scar tissue mobilisation

What are the benefits of the Graston method?

  • Release of shortened or stiffened muscular and fascial structures
  • Improved joint mobility and range of motion
  • Pain relief
  • Improved tissue circulation
  • Support for the body's natural recovery processes

What should you combine Graston with for the best results?

For an even more pronounced and longer-lasting effect, it is advisable to combine Graston with other therapies, such as:

  • Cupping
  • Classic or sports massage
  • Compensatory and release exercises

Such comprehensive care enhances the effect of the therapy and helps to prevent recurring problems.
