PREGNANCY PHYSIOTHERAPY at FYZIO KLINIK®
Pregnancy brings many changes into your life — beautiful as well as challenging. The body adapts to a new life, posture shifts, the centre of gravity moves and joint stability changes. It is no wonder that back pain, pelvic discomfort, tension and swelling appear.
Pregnancy physiotherapy is a gentle, safe and effective form of care that helps the body to release tension, regain balance and prepare for birth — with respect and expert guidance.
When is the right time to start physiotherapy during pregnancy
If you have no complaints, the ideal time for your first assessment is from the 13th week of pregnancy — when the body has stabilised after the first trimester and the bump begins to grow.
At this stage, the physiotherapist can detect early subtle changes that could later lead to pain or overload.
👉 However, if you are experiencing pain in the back, pelvis or pubic bone, swelling in the legs or tension in the pelvic floor, do not wait — come in sooner.
Early help means quicker relief and greater comfort throughout the whole of your pregnancy.

How a physiotherapy assessment during pregnancy is carried out
The assessment is always gentle, respectful and adapted to the current stage of pregnancy.
1. Initial consultation
To begin with, the physiotherapist will ask about the course of your pregnancy, your daily habits, sleep, any pain and your goals — such as relief, prevention or preparation for birth. The aim is not to check up on you, but to understand what your body needs right now.
2. Movement and functional analysis
We assess:
- posture and pelvic stability,
- breathing and engagement of the pelvic floor,
- assessment of diastasis of the abdominal muscles, which helps to prevent back pain and weakening of the core,
- monitoring of the separation of the abdominal muscles, as well as the response of the abdominal muscles during everyday movements and breathing,
- assessment of hip and joint mobility,
- assessment of the feet, since the arch often lowers during pregnancy and affects overall posture.
3. Gentle hands-on assessment
Where necessary, we evaluate muscle tension, pelvic floor function or restrictions.
An internal assessment of the pelvic floor muscles is not carried out as a preventative measure during pregnancy, but only in cases of significant difficulties (e.g. coccyx pain) and where the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks.
It is also possible to perform internal release of the pelvic floor muscles from the 36th week of pregnancy as part of muscle relaxation in preparation for birth.
Which techniques are used in women’s and pregnancy physiotherapy
The physiotherapist chooses techniques according to the individual needs of each woman — safely, sensitively and with regard to the current stage of pregnancy.
🌬️ Breathing therapy
Teaches you how to breathe correctly into the abdomen and pelvis, which activates the deep abdominal muscles and the pelvic floor. Correct breathing helps to release tension, improve circulation and prepare the body for birth.
🦴 Improving mobility of the lumbar spine and pelvis
Gentle mobilisation techniques improve joint mobility, release restrictions and help the body to function symmetrically. Proper pelvic mobility is key to a comfortable pregnancy and birth.
💫 Activation of the deep stabilisation system
As part of therapy, gentle activation of the deep stabilisation muscles is also used up to the third trimester, so that the body actively supports the growing bump.

👐 Pregnancy massage
Reduces swelling in the legs, improves circulation and relieves the spine. The massage is performed in safe positions, most often on the side or in a semi-reclined position.
🧘 Stability and balance exercises
Improve overall body stability, activate the deep stabilisation system and reduce strain on the spine. The physiotherapist will show you exercises that you can safely perform at home.
🌸 Pelvic floor training
Teaches you how to not only activate the pelvic floor, but also to release it — which is essential both during and after birth. The goal is balance, not constant tension.
🤰 Taping and bump support
Kinesiology tape relieves the lower back, supports the bump and encourages correct posture. It is a gentle yet highly effective form of support during increased strain.
🧣 Rebozo technique and pregnancy wrap
Rebozo is a gentle release technique using a wrap, which loosens the pelvis, lower back and abdomen and supports a feeling of stability.
The physiotherapist can use Rebozo as a massage method or teach you how to tie the wrap correctly, so that it takes weight off the bump, releases the back and brings relief at home too.
What we focus on in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters
2nd trimester — stability and pain prevention
During this period, the body adapts to the growing bump. The physiotherapist focuses on:
- posture and pelvic balance,
- activation of the deep muscles,
- release of tense areas,
- training breathing and coordination with the pelvic floor,
- working with the feet as the foundation of stability,
- correct movement habits throughout the day.
3rd trimester — preparation for birth
The aim is release and trust in your own body:
- releasing the pelvis and hips,
- breathing into the pelvis and conscious release of the pelvic floor,
- practising birthing positions,
- working with the Rebozo technique and wrap,
- stretching the muscles of the lower limbs,
- reducing strain on the lower back, pubic bone and coccyx.
Why pregnancy physiotherapy is so important
- it relieves pain in the back, pelvis and legs,
- it helps to prevent diastasis of the abdominal muscles,
- it improves posture and stability,
- it teaches you how to breathe correctly and work with the pelvic floor,
- it reduces swelling and tension,
- it prepares your body for birth,
- it supports recovery after birth.
Physiotherapy during pregnancy is practical support for a body that works to its full capacity every single day.
