SCAR PHYSIOTHERAPY

SCAR PHYSIOTHERAPY

What is a scar?

A scar is a 3D collagen structure that is the final result of wound healing.

It is important to realise that a scar reaches deep. As deep as the surgical instrument went. It is often forgotten that a scar, as such, has its own context and surroundings, which it influences and which, in turn, influence it. Scars are frequently accompanied by tensile forces that affect various structures in the surrounding area, such as nerves, blood vessels, ligaments, muscles and organs.

If you have had surgery, plastic surgery, a caesarean section, mole removal, or any kind of burns, scar therapy will be beneficial for you.

What is scar therapy?

It is a type of manual therapy inspired by the work of Rolfer Sharon Wheeler. You can read more about Rolfing HERE.

This manual therapy approaches scar tissue sensitively and with respect. The aim of this manual therapy is to integrate the scar into the fascial system in such a way that it restricts movement as little as possible. The quality of scar tissue can be changed quickly. Lumps, tears, holes and knots become smoother and more elastic. Changes begin during the session, continue after it has ended and, what is more, they are permanent!

How many therapy sessions are needed for one scar?

The number of sessions depends on the size and depth of the scar. For post-surgical scars we recommend 2–3 sessions. For scars after mole removal, 1–2 sessions are usually enough, and we can work on several scars during a single session.

Who is scar therapy intended for?

For anyone who has had surgery, plastic surgery, mole removal, or any kind of burns, and who feels that the scar pulls, restricts movement, is numb and/or painful.

A scar is a positive symbol – it represents survival and the continuation of life.

Benefits of scar therapy

  • a more relaxed and flatter scar
  • a change in the appearance of the scar (although the scar will not disappear)
  • freer movement
  • contributes to the overall integrity of the body
  • improves your relationship with the scar and your image of yourself and your body

What are the contraindications of scar therapy?

  • if your doctor has not given permission to work on the scar
  • if the scar is open or infected
  • inflammation or weeping
  • if the scar has undergone laser therapy and is swollen and/or red
